About Bill

William Gaultiere has worked as a Christian Psychotherapist in Irvine, California since 1987 and he was licensed in CA as a Psychologist in 1991 (#PSY12036) and ordained as a minister in 1995. Since 2003 Bill has offered spiritual direction/mentoring to ministers and Christian leaders and also through Christ’s Ambassadors Spiritual Growth Groups.  Since 1994 he has served as the Executive Director of the New Hope Crisis Counseling Center at the Crystal Cathedral, where he has trained over 1,000 Christian lay counselors and in 1997 founded “New Hope Online” as the first online counseling service with free Christian help 24-hours a day. He is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors and Spiritual Directors International.

Bill often ministers with his wife Kristi.  They speak together on topics related to spiritual formation, marriage, family, and Christian psychology.  In 2007 they helped plant "Pathways Church" in Irvine and developed the church's spiritual formation and mentoring ministry.

Bill is author of three books, including A Walk with Your Shepherd, and has contributed to other books including The Life Recovery Bible and The Complete Parenting Book.  He writes regular articles for the Crystal Cathedral Ministries' websites and his own website.  He also writes a bi-weekly Christian Soul Care Devotional e-mail for over 1,500 people who have requested to receive this. Bill has been featured on national television, including The Hour of Power, and national radio, including Minirth-Meier New Life Live. He’s offered many seminars, classes, and retreats on Christian Psychology and Spirituality to groups of ministers, Christian leaders, and others. In addition to speaking to church groups he has enjoyed presenting workshops at many conferences including the Spiritual Formation Forum Conference, Renovare International, Robert H. Schuller Institute for Successful Church Leadership, and the International Conference on Care and Kindness.

Previously, Bill served as the Co-Director of the Minirth-Meier New Life Clinic West Day Hospital Program in Orange, supervised Marriage and Family Interns and Psychological Assistants for The Center for Family therapy and other clinics, and taught graduate psychology courses at schools like Azusa Pacific University.

Bill earned a Ph.D. in Psychology from Alliant University (1989 - when it was called U.S. International Univ.), an M.A. in Psychology from Rosemead Graduate School at Biola University (1987), and a B.A. in Psychology from Oral Roberts University (1985). Bill completed a two-year (300 hour) certificate program in Spiritual Direction, Formation, and Leadership with The Leadership Institute (2007).  He’s also taken graduate seminary courses through Talbot Seminary and Fuller Theological Seminary. In addition to taking regular continuing education in Psychology, Bill frequently attends conferences and reads in the area of Christian spiritual formation, especially benefiting from the teaching of Dallas Willard and Richard Foster and reading the classics of Christian devotion.  His early work as a psychotherapist was under the supervision of Dave Stoop.

Bill participated in psychotherapy for himself from 1984 to 1994. Since that time he has received regular support and prayer through conversations with spiritual friends. Since 2003 he has participated in monthly spiritual mentoring appointments with Ray Ortlund and regular spiritual retreats at local monasteries like the Prince of Peace Abbey in Oceanside, CA.

Bill’s “life verse” from the Bible is 2 Corinthians 5:20: “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God” (NIV) or “… Become friends with God; he’s already a friend with you” (MSG).

Bill and Kristi were married in 1986 and have three children: David (“Beloved of God”) born in 1991, Jenny (“Beautiful like the Lord”) born in 1993, and Briana (“Strong in God’s Grace”) born in 1995. They live in Irvine, California and their family attends Mariners Church.
