Are you A-N A-D-D-I-C-T?
William Gaultiere, Ph.D.
Do you or someone you know have an addiction that needs to be addressed? To assess if a problem behavior pattern qualifies as an addiction I use the acronym: “AN ADDICT.” To use this screening test ask yourself these eight questions, regarding your problem behavior (e.g., alcohol, drugs, eating, sex, work). At least four yes answers suggests compulsive behavior. (Accurate diagnoses needs to be made in person by a trained health professional.)
1. Alone. Do you like to use the substance or activity alone?
2. Non-premeditated use. Do you sometimes do this without planning or intending to?
3. Amnesia. Have you ever lost recollection of a period of time during which you used this substance or activity?
4. Depend on the “high.” Do you anticipate your next opportunity to do this?
5. Distracted. Are you distracted with thoughts of doing this?
6. Increased tolerance. Are you able to do more of this than most people? Do you have to use this substance or activity more and more to get the “high” you want?
7. Conceal supply. Do you hide this behavior or your access to it?
8. Tranquilizer. Do you do this to numb pain or avoid problems?
